Long years ago, Young Banyan Tree complained to the Old Banyan Tree about his small role to help other creatures in the jungle. Every morning and daytime, he had to inhale dirty air and with the help of sun, he had to spread fresh air for the animals to breath. He had to prepare his thick leaves to prepare the place for birds to make their nest and for other animals to take shelter under him.
“Try to keep going green to make the animals around us happy!” Old Banyan Tree said.
“I feel that I am just passive creature. I cannot walk any where like what lions, monkeys and elephants do. Although snakes have no leg, they still can go anywhere.” Young Banyan complained.
“Your leaves, which fall to the ground, make the soil fertile.” Old Banyan Tree said.
“But it does not prove that I am powerful and important creature.”
“Hi Young Banyan, you are a kind of plants. You are one of important parts in food chain and creature interaction in this jungle. Plants have very important role. Although lions are strong animals, they cannot live without plant” Old Banyan Tree tried to make Young Banyan Tree’s feeling better.
“Why should I care about lion? They are evil animals. They eat other animals in this jungle.” Young Banyan Tree complained.
“Lions just follow their natural instinct. They eat because they are hungry and need to eat. Unlike greedy human beings, for lions, enough is enough. Greedy human beings hunt for pleasure, pride, and greediness. This world is not enough for greedy human beings.” Old Banyan Tree explained.
“Why must I go green? Why should I care about other? What is the benefit for me?” Small Banyan Tree still complained.
“It is the calling from the Creator to do your small role in this universe. Kid, just do your role and you will understand,” Old Banyan Tree said.
Once upon a time, five greedy illegal loggers came to the jungle to exploit the wood. Not only did they cut the trees for money but they also hunted the animal for pride and pleasure. For them, “enough” is not enough and for their greediness, this world is not enough.
Five illegal loggers stood in front of Small Banyan Tree. They did not care whether it was still not old enough to cut. They were interested to cut and prepare their tools.
The Legend of King Bali Another interesting Diwali legend is of King Bali. He was a generous ruler but also very ambitious. To propitiate the gods he performed a Yagna (fire sacrifice). His Yagna was so successful that even the gods were terrified to appear before him and grant him a boon in the fear that what he might ask something which is beyond their capacity. Some of the Gods pleaded Vishnu to check King Bali’s power. Vishnu came to earth in the form of a dwarf dressed as priest.
When the priest reached King Bali’s court, he asked him to ask for anything he wanted. The priest said “You are the ruler of the three worlds: the Earth, the world above the skies and the underworld. Would you give me the space that I could cover with three strides?” King Bali laughed. This request seemed strange to all the courtiers, but king Bali granted it. Surely a dwarf could not cover much ground, thought the King, who agreed to dwarf’s request.
Once the request was granted to him, the priest, who was none but Visnu in disguise, submerged the entire world (Mrityu-loka) with one step, with the second he submerged heaven (Swarga-loka) and for the third step; there was no respectable place to put his foot down and so he asked the bewildered Bali for some respectable place to this foot so that the boon could be fulfilled. Left with no alternative, the noble but exasperated King Bali offered his head for the purpose. To his surprise, the priest not only lost no time in placing his foot over King Bali’s head, but also thrust Bali into the nether worlds (Patala-loka) which as per Hindu cosmogony is hell and lies below the surface of the earth.
The second day of Diwali (Bali Prati-pada) is celebrated in memory of this. Prati-pada here translates as “below the opponent’s foot” (Prati=opponent, Pada=foot). During Diwali festival people celebrates the victory of good over evil.
STORY: THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE, AN AESOP FABLE From a far off land neither here nor there I bring you the fable of the Tortoise and the Hare Hare was very conceited and thought that he was the most handsome animal in all of the forest. He would often gaze into the mirror and say, “I am so handsome. Look at my lovely long ears, my pretty pink nose, and my beautiful buck teeth!” He also thought that he was the fastest animal in all of the forest. One day, Hare overheard a group of turtles talking. They said, “Cousin Tortoise has never lost a race. He always wins!” “Ha!” scoffed Hare, “We’ll see about that!” He marched over to the group of turtles and said, “Everyone knows that I am the fastest animal in all of the forest. Tell your cousin Tortoise that I challenge him to a race!” The next day, Tortoise met Hare in the clearing. He said, “Hello, I am Tortoise. Are you ready to race?” Hare answered with a laugh, “Of course I am because I am the fastest animal in all of the forest. Prepare to eat my dust!” Tortoise and Hare lined up. Raccoon held her tail up in the air and said, “On your mark, ready, ready, go!” Hare took off and left Tortoise in a cloud of dust. Meanwhile… Tortoise never wavered from the race He kept on going at a steady pace Hare looked behind and saw that he was far ahead of Tortoise. He decided he had time for a little break. So he stopped by the side of the road and pulled out his mirror. He said, “Just look at me. So handsome. Not a hair out of place.” As Hare admired himself, he saw another reflection in the mirror. It was… Tortoise! You see… Tortoise never wavered from the race He kept on going at a steady pace
A bear came across a log where a swarm of bees had nested to make their honey. As he snooped around, a single little bee flew out of the log to protect the swarm. Knowing that the bear would eat all the honey, the little bee stung him sharply on the nose and flew back into the log.
This flew the bear into an angry rage. He swatted at the log with his big claws, determined to destroy the nest of bees inside. This only alerted the bees and quick as a wink, the entire swarm of bees flew out of the log and began to sting the bear from head to heel. The bear saved himself by running to and diving into the nearest pond.
A very young mouse made his first trip out of the hole and into the world. He returned to tell his mother of the wonderful creatures he saw.
"Oh, Mother," said the mouse, "I saw some curious animals. There was one beautiful animal with fluffy fur and a long winding tail. She made such a tender vibrating noise. I saw another animal, a terrible looking monster. He had raw meat on his head and on his chin that wiggled and shook as he walked. He spread out his sides and cried with such a powerful and frightening wail, that I scurried away in fear, without even talking to the kind beautiful animal.
Mother Mouse smiled, "My dear, that horrible creature was a harmless bird, but that beautiful animal with the fluffy fur was a mouse-eating cat. You are lucky she did not have you for dinner."
The wind and the sun argued one day over which one was the stronger. Spotting a man man traveling on the road, they sported a challenge to see which one could remove the coat from the man's back the quickest. The wind began. He blew strong gusts of air, so strong that the man could barely walk against them. But the man clutched his coat tight against him. The wind blew harder and longer, and the harder the wind blew, the tighter the man held his coat against him.The wind blew until he was exhausted, but he could not remove the coat from the man's back. It was now the sun's turn. He gently sent his beams upon the traveler. The sun did very little, but quietly shone upon his head and back until the man became so warm that he took off his coat and headed for the nearest shade tree.
